WITH OPEN ARMS AND WARM SMILES...

Yes, it’s that time of year again when Williamsport becomes the city most often mentioned on television. It’s Little League World Series week and virtually every parking place will be gone, every intersection will be congested and people from strange places will be talking with hard to understand accents (New Jersey residents included).

No city in the world ever enjoys such continuous attention in such a positive light. The television crews perpetually sing the praises of the Little League program and our area to millions of listeners through the entire month of August each year.

It’s hardly a wonder why residents of LA or New York consider this area an oasis. With the gorgeous mountains, sparkling river, clean air and most importantly, reasonably priced restaurants! These are attributes that can be totally foreign to residents of urban areas.

In light of all this positive exposure it’s up to us, the native born and/or year-long residents of Williamsport to continue to portray our area as the perfect snapshot of Americana. Each and every one of us should be acutely aware of just how much our interaction with these visitors will impact their perception of Williamsport. Let's all greet this year's Series visitors with open arms and warm smiles.

In the film “Pay It Forward” a single child affects the lives of hundreds of people by simply going out of his way to help total strangers. By simply “doing a favor in advance” he changes the attitude and outlook and ultimately the behavior of hundreds of strangers who, impressed by his contagious acts of kindness, adopt the same philosophy themselves. Eventually everyone is treating others like they would like to be treated themselves. Sounds like a great golden rule doesn’t it?

So as you get stuck in traffic, or find yourself standing in a longer line at a restaurant, or if someone asks you for directions yet again, pay it forward. Let’s show the world that the most beautiful asset Williamsport has to offer is not its scenery but its people.

Who knows, maybe we can even have a positive effect on the attitude and behavior of our visitors (except of course New Jersey).
